Organizers blame COVID-19; Marion County Fair still on

One Northeast Missouri county won't hold its' County Fair this summer, while another will, but with changes.

The Lewis County Fair Board announced Wednesday morning that this year's Fair was canceled, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A statement released on the Fair's Facebook page said that the decision was made after talks Tuesday between the Board, 4-H and FFA representatives, the Lewis County Health Department and the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. The Fair Board said that due to state and Federal safety procedures, the fair's carnival withdrawing and current guidelines under which 4-H have to operate, holding the Fair this year would be "nearly impossible."

The Fair Board says they'll work with the 4-H Council and University of Missouri Extension to make their facilities available should guidelines be lessened to make a 4-H and FFA show feasible. The Board's also discussing the possibility of a fall event, should circumstances allow.

The Marion County Fair Board says this year's fair will be held, with some differences.

That fair is set to take place fom August 1st through 8th in Palmyra, and Fair organizers say that plans are in place to comply with standards put forth by Missouri Governor Mike Parson, the CDC and the Marion County Health Department. A statement says that the Fair may look a little different this year but organizers are ready. Each event is being evaluated and will be updated as many times as needed.

Marion County Fair organizers Michele and Randy Hopson said that planning for the fair is moving forward, but that they are "doing it with caution." They also say “This community really needs a fair right now."
