Resident in stable condition; CDC back on campus

The Illinois Department of Public Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs says a 3rd resident at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy has been diagnosed this week with Legionnaires' Disease.

The announcement of the third lab-confirmed case of the disease at the Vets Home was made Thursday afternoon. The IDPH says the positive test result was reported late Wednesday, and the resident is in stable condition. In a press release, Veterans Affairs says it's boosting disinfection levels in the Vets Home's water to further reduce any potential exposure to residents or staff. They're also implementing modified water restrictions across the campus, including installing Laminar flow devices on all sinks, limiting bathing to showers only, instituting temperature checks every two hours while residents are awake, and full vitals every four hours. Representatives from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have returned to the Vets Home, at the request of the IDPH on Tuesday, to review testing protocols for residents with respiratory illness.

The agencies say the teams will continue trying to find potential sources of Legionella bacteria at the home.
