$1.4 million trimmed Wednesday; Jail size shrinks from 77,000 sq ft to 69,500 sq ft.

The Board's Jail sub-committee was able Wednesday to trim some $1.4 million from the Jail's construction budget, and bring it down from $31.2 million, to $29.8 million. That's still $600,000 above the original $29.2 million figure, but that budget also includes some $1.7 million in contingency funds, which may not all be used. In order to bring the budget down, the size of the Jail was decreased by 7600 square feet, and eight single bed cells will be converted to double bed cells. Adams County Sheriff Brian VonderHaar, who was in on the meetings throughout the day, thinks they did a pretty good job.

VonderHaar also says that the cuts won't negatively impact how jailers will do their job in the new Jail.

A revised concept of the jail may be presented at next month's Board meeting. Demolition on buildings on the Jail site may get underway later this month.
