Former State's Attorney Barney Bier is the newest member of the County Board, after his appointment was approved. He replaces John Heidbreder, who stepped down in December after serving for 42 years. The Board also approved collective bargaining agreements with six different county departments. The new contracts range in length from two to four years, depending on the department. Salary terms won't be disclosed until the agreements are signed. Executive Committee member Bret Austin says that these contracts are much different that previous contracts, in that employees are buying into their insurance plans, by covering 10 per cent of the premium rate. Austin says that the county is now able to offer more plans, and that the premiums are lower than before.

The Board also learned that the Sheriff's Department will start training in March at the new County Jail, and that public tours may happen in mid-March. The new jail could hold prisoners in April.
