Adams County Board opposes site of proposed hog facility

Board's non-binding vote was unanimous

The Adams County Board has voted to oppose a proposed hog confinement facility near Columbus and Camp Point, after finding that the company who wants to build the facility didn't meet certain criteria. Scott Hardy has more.

The Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to oppose the site of the facility that Pike Pig Systems wants to build. The Board was asked by the Illinois Department of Agriculture to verify whether the company met all eight of its' criteria for the facility, and Chairman Les Post says they didn't.

The Board found that Pike Pig Systems met only six of the eight criteria. Post says that one problem was that the company hadn't finalized plans for improving roads leading to the facility.

Post also said that the company's location within two miles of Columbus, Camp Point and development along Highway 24 would have made a negative economic impact on the area. The Board's vote is non-binding, and the Ag Department has the final say.
