Adams County tax rate to stay unchanged

Adams County tax rate to stay unchanged

County will also borrow $10 million this year for Jail construction

Adams County residents won't see an increase in their property tax rate from the County Board next year. Scott Hardy has more.

The Board Tuesday night adopted a tax levy of 79.34 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. That's a negligible increase from last year's rate of 79.17 cents. County Finance Committee Chairman Duane Venvertloh says the County will collect nearly $9.5 million, some $360,000 more than last year. He says that's due to a rise in assessed valuations, which won't affect the County's tax rate.

That extra amount will cover some budget increases in County offices, and shortfalls in state funding. The County Board also held an emergency meeting, to adopt a resolution authorizing borrowing some of the money raised when the County issued $25 million in bonds to pay for building the new County Jail. Venvertloh says the County will borrow the money over three years' time.

Construction on the Jail's foundation has started, and should be done within four to five weeks.
