Company plans to increase wind, solar output

A Missouri-based energy provider says it plans to spend over a billion dollars over the next five years to increase its' output of renewable energy.

Ameren Missouri announced its' plans in a statement released Monday, which include "dramatically increasing" the amount of wind and solar power it generates. The company says it plans to add at least 700 megawatts of wind generation by 2020, and also plans to add 100 megawatts of solar generation over the next 10 years, with 50 megawatts expected to come online by 2025. The new wind generation is expected to be located in Missouri and neighboring states using American-made turbines. Ameren says that the source, location and cost of the wind project is still under negotiation with several developers. It also says its' solar generation plans will be developed in multiple phases over the next 10 years. It also says it's establishing a goal of reducing its carbon emissions 80% by 2050 from the 2005 level. That includes closing over half its' coal-fired generating capacity.

Any of Ameren Missouri's proposed projects in Missouri need approval by the Missouri Public Service Commission.
