Incident happened Monday; child got out of the bus and walked home

The Canton R-5 School District says that a sleeping kindergarten student was left on a bus Monday after school, and eventually walked home.

The Superintendent's Office Friday released a statement saying that its' administrative team learned about the student Monday night around 8 PM. They say that the bus completed its' route at around 4:20 PM. The child's parents said that the student was able to get out of the bus through the front exit and walked 7 to 8 blocks to his home, where his mother found him at around 4:45 PM. The statement says that it has been confirmed that the bus driver didn't complete a required post-trip inspection of the bus, and that the student was sleeping when the driver left the bus. The student was then left unsupervised for about 25 minutes from the time he woke up until he was discovered at home.

The School District says they're investigating the incident, as are outside agencies. Superintendent Jesse Uhlmeyer says they're cooperating fully in the investigation, and says the District has "taken several steps to ensure that this situation does not occur in the future.”
