Canton R-V to limit students' peanut exposure

One student had "severe allergic reaction" earlier this week

Canton school officials say they will take steps to limit student exposure to peanuts, after a student had a severe allergic reaction earlier this week.

In a statement released Friday by the Canton R-5 School District, officials say they were told that a student has been diagnosed with a severe, life-threatening allergy to peanuts. They say that the student suffered anaphylaxis and that their airway closed, which required life-support measures to be taken. They say that was a result of exposure to peanuts or products containing peanuts. The District says it will be taking proactive steps to help minimize exposure to peanuts, including having the cafeteria staff remove all peanut products from the regular menu and ala carte options. Canton officials will also be designating several tables in the cafeteria as “peanut-free” tables. They're also asking students who bring lunch daily begin to eliminate peanut products from their lunches.

Canton officials are also asking parents to make sure that all pre-packaged classroom snacks and/or treats do not contain peanuts.
