A Hannibal man, found Guilty on multiple charges in connection with the shooting of three people at a party in March 2016, has been sentenced to nearly 40 years in prison.

Carl Emerson, Jr. was sentenced Friday by Judge David Mobley in Monroe County Circuit Court to 39 years in prison. Emerson was found Guilty in October by a Monroe County jury on counts of 1st Degree Assault, Armed Criminal Action and two counts of 2nd Degree Assault. The jury returned their verdict after 8 hours of deliberations, after a two-day trial. The case was heard in Monroe County on a change of venue from Marion County. Emerson was found to have committed the shootings, which happened during an argument over a racial slur used during a story by one of the victims.

Emerson could have received a life sentence from Mobley.
