Defense request for exam of Shellie Clark granted Tuesday

A suburban Denver, Colorado woman, charged with Arson in connection with an early-November fire at a Monroe City motel, will have a mental fitness exam.

A defense request for that exam of Shellie Clark of Arvada, Colorado was granted Tuesday at a hearing in Monroe County Associate Court. Prosecutors had a similar request denied last month. In addition, Clark's had her $50,000 cash bond lowered to $25,000. Clark’s facing one count of 1st Degree Arson. Prosecutors say that according to Monroe City police, a room Clark was staying in at the Bel-Air Motel was fully engulfed in smoke and flames when they arrived. Clark had told officers she had fallen asleep with a lit candle and discovered the room was on fire. While waiting for officers in the motel’s lobby as they investigated the room fire, Clark allegedly lit some fake plants and other items on fire with a lighter.

Clark's been held in the Randolph County Jail, and will have a preliminary hearing March 19th.
