Authorities say Uriel Garcia, 20, of Burbank IL drowned in pond near Griggsville
Authorities have now released the name of a 20-year-old man who drowned Thursday night, while kayaking in a small pond northwest of Griggsville.
Pike County Sheriff Paul Petty identified the man as Uriel Garcia of Burbank, in Cook County, Illinois. Witnesses said that Garcia was visiting and staying at a local rental property with friends when he went into the water in a kayak on a small pond, just after 7:30 PM. They said that Garcia couldn't swim, and immediately went under water. Rescue personnel recovered the body at about 8:15 PM. According to a statement from the Pike County Sheriff's Department, alcohol and drugs are believed to have played a role in the drowning.
Petty says that Garcia's death remains under investigation by the Pike County Sheriff's Department and the Pike County Coroner's Office. He adds that preliminary autopsy results won't be available for at least two weeks.
