First major winter storm of the season on its way

First major winter storm of the season on its way

2 months ago by Scott Hardy

Area could see 5-7" of snow by Saturday night

The first major snow storm of the season is approaching the WTAD listening area, and is expected to arrive late Friday afternoon.

The National Weather Service says that the Quincy / Hannibal / Keokuk area can expect 5 to 7 inches of snow starting late Friday afternoon, through late Saturday night. Southeast Iowa, along with parts of Clark and Hancock counties, could see 4 to 6 inches. Some of those areas could also see some freezing rain late Saturday afternoon. A Winter Storm Warning has already been issued for Adams, Brown and Pike Counties in Illinois and Marion, Lewis, Pike, Ralls, Monroe and Shelby counties in Missouri. The rest of the area is under a Winter Weather Advisory starting Friday night. As of right now, the St. Louis area is expecting to see the heaviest snowfall, of up to 8 inches. That area and the Columbia / Jefferson City area, could also see sleet mixed with the snow. The Weather Service says that the storm is expected to cause travel to potentially be hazardous, especially Friday night.

With the approach of the winter storm, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency has some tips on how you can be prepared. They include familiarizing yourself with the various weather alert definitions, so you know how to keep your family safe; winterizing your home and taking steps to prevent frozen water pipes; making an emergency plan for you and your family, and building a home emergency kit with items such as food, water, medications, NOAA weather radio, flashlight and spare batteries. IEMA also recommends that you stock your vehicle with the emergency items such as a phone charger, blankets, extra clothes, jumper cables, kitty litter or sand, a flashlight and snow scraper in the event you must travel. They also say that if you lose power, seek out a nearby warming center until power can be restored. They urge everyone to take time now to prepare your family, home and vehicle for everything from a dusting of snow to a major winter storm.

IEMA says a Winter Weather Preparedness guide is available at Ready.Illinois.gov.
