While the state of Illinois is still finalizing the Master Plan for the Veteran's Home, one piece of the project is nearly complete and has a new name. In June, the State of Illinois purchased the former Sycamore Healthcare Center to become part of the expanded Veterans Home campus. During a Friday morning ceremony, the facility was officially renamed Corporal Lester Hammond Jr. Hall in honor of a U.S. Medal of Honor recipient from Quincy who died in the Korean war. Since June, construction crews have spent over 70,000 man-hours working on renovations to turn Hammond Hall into a state of the art facility. Governor Bruce Rauner called it a major step in improving the quality of health care and living conditions for the residents of the Veterans Home.

Hammond Hall will be able to house up to 150 residents when renovations are complete. Renovations are expected to be finished by December and veterans will begin moving in in January
