Crews respond to structure fire at 17th and Spring

Many on and off-duty Quincy Firefighters were busy controlling a four-alarm structure fire late into Saturday night.

The Quincy Fire Department responded to heavy smoke in the 1700 block of Spring Street around 7:30 Saturday night to find the structure attached to the old Bernzen Lumber Company building on fire. No one has been reported hurt, and crews say they believe the building was abandoned. Quincy Fire Chief Joe Henning says the blaze had to have spread from a source outside the building, and witnesses say they believe the fire started in a dumpster and ended up spreading to the structure.

Fire crews and Quincy Police had the intersection of 17th and Spring blocked off into early Sunday morning as they made sure the fire was completely out. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
