Gas Leak on Quincy's south side causes evacuations

Leak happened on Payson Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets

Residents of one Quincy street had to be evacuated Wednesday morning, due to a natural gas leak.

Shortly before 10 AM, Quincy firefighters were called about what was called quote, "a major gas leak" at 1127 Payson Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets. A City of Quincy Central Services crew were digging to work on water lines, when they accidentally hit a gas line. Emergency personnel were called in to evacuate homes on the street, and Ameren was called in to cap the leak, which they were able to do. After 90 minutes or so, residents were able to be let back into their homes.

Traffic to the area was blocked off for several hours, including a one-block section of 12th Street. That's now re-opened.
