Andrew DeHaven to undergo a mental fitness exam

A Pontoosuc man, accused of beating his father to death with a hammer, will have a second mental fitness review.

Andrew DeHaven was in Hancock County Circuit Court Thursday for a motion hearing. A report on DeHaven's mental fitness has been submitted, but not reviewed in court. DeHaven's defense had filed a motion to have him undergo another fitness exam. Records show that was granted. That caused an October 19th pre-trial hearing to be delayed. DeHaven's pleaded Not Guilty to three counts of 1st Degree Murder in the death of his father Michael DeHaven. Charging documents say that on February 9th, the younger DeHaven hit his father in the head with a hammer numerous times, at a home in the 600 block of 4th Street in Pontoosuc. He's then alleged to have told a neighbor to call the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, saying he just killed his father. DeHaven also allegedly told authorities he committed the murder after his arrest.

DeHaven's in the Hancock County Jail on $3 million bond, and will be back in court November 4th.
