Hannibal City Council approves first reading of revised Chloramine ordinance

6 years, 7 months ago by Scott Hardy

May vote on matter in two weeks

Hannibal's Board of Public Works may get more time from the Hannibal City Council to remove chloramines from the city's drinking water.

Tuesday night, the Council approved a first reading of a proposed ordinance that would give the BPW three years to stop using chloramines, which are used to disinfect water from the Mississippi, before it goes to the tap. The BPW has said it needs the extra time to implement the changes, and during the meeting, BPW General Manager Bob Stevenson presented a report outlining the board's actions since voters approved Proposition 1 in April. Members of the group who got Prop 1 on the ballot feel the BPW only need two years to switch to an activated charcoal filtering system. A water study is now planned to make sure the BPW can foresee any potential problems or challenges.

The Council is scheduled to vote on the revised ordinance at its' next meeting, in two weeks.
