Hannibal Council Buys a House

Home is at 505 Walnut; will eventually be a garden

The Hannibal City Council Tuesday night approved the purchase of a property on the south side of town for a dollar.

The house that sits on the property at 505 Walnut has been condemned and will need to be demolished. But a neighbor has requested to purchase the property from the city for the same one dollar price tag and will demolish the property himself and turn the land into a garden. One sticking point discussed last night was a debt of 781 dollars in taxes owed to the county for that property. Council members agreed to pay that paying the taxes would cost the city thousands of dollars less than the cost of demolition and maintenance of the property.

Council also approved several resolutions dealing with financial issues. Among them was a financing agreement with Clayton Holdings LLC - a subsidiary of Commerce Bank for the lease/purchase of a new fleet of police cars. Another resolution allows the Board of Public Works to terminate a Lease/Purchase with the Missouri Association of Municipal Utilities. The lease began in 2008 and was used to construct the West Substation located within the City Industrial Park. The BPW made the final payment on that project earlier this year.
