HAYS to start Trauma-Informed Program for Schools program

The United Way of the Mark Twain Area has announced which Northeast Missouri organization will get grant money to help fight drug abuse.

The United Way announced Thursday morning that HAYS, or the Hannibal Alliance for Youth Success, has won a $25,000 Substance Abuse Prevention Grant. HAYS was picked by the United Way's Substance Abuse Prevention Committee. HAYS will use the $25,000 to start a Youth-Focused Substance Abuse Prevention Program in the area. HAYS says that they'll start a program called TIPS, or Trauma-Informed Program for Schools to the area. According to HAYS, the TIPS program will provide trauma awareness training and education to regional educators. Through a team at the school made up of educators, students identified as experiencing trauma would then be connected to area resources to assist them with the trauma they have experienced. Students also would learn coping techniques and self-awareness through trauma-focused curricula.

The local United Way announced last May that they had received the $25,000 from Continental Cement and Green America Recycling to fund a youth-focused substance abuse prevention program in the area. The United Way says that substance abuse is a rising issue affecting many lives within the Hannibal area and Northeast Missouri.
