Hannibal's New Mayor

Hannibal's New Mayor

7 years, 11 months ago by Jim Dewey

Hannibal's longest serving mayor Roy Hark conducted his last meeting Tuesday night.

His last act as Mayor before adjourning sine die was to swear in his son James Hark as Hannibal's next mayor.

As he opened his first meeting - Mayor James Hark issued a challenge to his fellow council members to remember that they are not the ones who hold the power in the community...

Hark said, " The power in the city, what is perceived as power, lies with it's citizens."

Hark said the citizens elect the mayor and council to represent them, "and we're to carry out the necessary duties and obligations to run the city that best represents them.

Hark noted that the council's decisions won't always be popular with everyone, "we do what's best for the majority and for the community for years to come."

During that meeting council members approved the process for filling the now vacant fifth ward seat that had been held by Hark.

A deadline of June 7th has been set for fifth ward residents to apply for the position.

Those who qualify will be invited to the June 21st council meeting when council members will choose the person to fill Hark's unexpired term.
