Hannibal's Nuisance Ordinance to be amended

Hannibal's Nuisance Ordinance to be amended

7 years, 1 month ago by Jim Dewey

Would give more time to comply

The Hannibal City council gave first reading to an ordinance last night that changes the length of time residents have to comply with the city's nuisance ordinance.

The ordinance currently allows 7 days from the time notice is given to remove a nuisance from a property. City Attorney James Lemon says the ordinance brings the city in compliance with a change in state law.

5th ward councilman Gordon Ipson initially requested the reading be tabled. Ipson said several constituents had contacted him to say the ordinance does not allow for someone restoring an automobile to park it on their property. He withdrew his motion after Lemon explained the need to pass this bill. An amendment addressing Ipson's concern will likely be presented at the next council meeting on March 7th.

Council gave second and final reading to an ordinance annexing property near Fiddlesticks restaurant. Owners of Fiddlesticks and the Quality Inn and Suites are planning to open a coffee shop.
