Board of Education bringing company back to fix problems, ensure they don't happen at other sites

The Quincy School Board learned Wednesday night that heating and cooling systems in two of its' completed new buidings have had repeated breakdowns.

The Board is making sure that the HVAC malfunctions that have plagued both the Senior High addition and Lincoln-Douglas School don't happen at the other four new elementary schools now under construction. Building Committee Chairman Richard McNay told the Board that engineers from Diekon, the maker of the heating and air conditioning systems used at both sites, are being summoned to Quincy. McNay says the district is holding Diekon responsible for fixing the current problems at no cost, and for preventing similar problems at the other buildings.

The Board also approved spending nearly $700,000 on improvements to Quincy Junior High. The doors and windows in entryways to the Junior High will be completely replaced this summer. The original oak doors will be replaced with mahogany wood framing and Jeldwen brand fiberglass doors, stained to look just like mahogany. The idea is to mimic the current architectural style and look of the Junior High building. Leander Construction of Canton Illinois provided the low bid of $690,000 to do the work.

One Board member wants to get school-based healthcare implemented throughout Quncy schools, saying it would cut down on truancy. Quincy School Board member Mike Troup says students who are often ill, or who are cared for by folks who are ill, miss a lot of school. He's leading the effort to get school based healthcare implemented in the Quincy Public Schools. The first all-out health services effort will come this fall, when the district will work with medical providers to give immunization shots to students in their school buildings. Students who aren't immunized by the end of October can't attend classes.
