In Case of Emergency, Call my Hairdresser

In Case of Emergency, Call my Hairdresser

The loyalty of a woman to her hairdresser cannot be quantified.  But I’ll try.

Recently, I helped an 83 year old woman fill out her durable power of attorney for  healthcare.  Next to her phone, on a piece of cardboard you get when shirts come back from the laundry, was a list of her important phone numbers.  Her daughter was first, then some friends and neighbors. What struck me was how high on the emergency contact sheet her beautician was listed.  Trust me, I understand -- bad hair is a real emergency.

This lovely lady is experiencing the onset of old age.  She hurts a lot.  She doesn't want to go out to eat much anymore.  Getting to a doctor's appointment is a chore.  But there is no way she is staying home and missing her hair appointment.  The same day she told a specialist she couldn't muster the strength to come to his office for more testing, she braved the elements and was helped by her son into the hairdressing salon.

Hair matters.  Cut, color and style are life essentials.  Not being able to get to the hairdresser -- now that is an emergency!
