Former IDES head Jeff Mays now permanent City Director of Administrative Services

The interim tag has been removed from a Quincy city official's title.

Former Director of the Illinois Department of Employment Security Jeff Mays is now the permanent Director of Administrative Services for the city of Quincy. The former State Representative's hiring was unanimously approved by aldermen at Monday night's City Council meeting. Aldermen also approved a resolution that will have the city spend up to $400,000 to hire a Springfield, Illinois firm to design and handle bidding for the first phase of the city's plan to eliminate Combined Sewer overflow. That contract is part of the city's nearly $26 million plan approved last August by Federal officials to comply with a Federal mandate to keep storm and sewer runoffs separated.

The Council also approved a five-year contract to retain Western Illinois Veterinary Clinic as the city's animal shelter. The contracts' worth over $693,000, or nearly $139,000 a year. Western first won the contract in 2016, after the previous contract with Andrew Kaiser and Katherine Road Animal Hospital was terminated a year early. That happened after Kaiser was cited for 15 violations by the state of Illinois. He later had his license suspended. Earlier, aldermen decided to not consider a competing three-year bid from Homeward Bound Waggin, worth $396,000.
