Accused of 1st Degree Murder in 2015 beating death

A January 22nd trial date is still set for a Quincy man, accused of murder in a 2015 beating death above a Quincy bar - for now.

Derek McKenzie was in Adams County Circuit Court Tuesday afternoon for a status hearing in his 1st Degree Murder case. At the hearing, his defense revealed that they still don't have a grant they need to pay a DNA expert for a report. They believe they'll eventually get the money, but they're not sure when. If that DNA report is completed in the next few weeks, the prosecution said they would need to delay the trial, to study the report. The defense did say they wanted a delay in the trial, which Judge Debra Wellborn didn't grant, since there was no motion filed. McKenzie’s accused of beating Billy Graham to death with his fists, and a clamp, in an apartment above a Quincy bar in December, 2015. He remains in the Adams County Jail on $5 million bond.

Another status hearing in the case is set for November 29th.
