First budget increase in six years

As expected, John Wood Community College's Board of Trustees have approved a nearly $15 million budget for the next fiscal year.

The Board approved that $14.99 million balanced budget for the 2019 fiscal year Wednesday night. It's over $771,000 higher than the previous year and in a statement from the College, the spending plan ends a trend of decreasing budgets. The 2018 budget was JWCC's lowest since 2009. Tuition and fees will account for 54% of the College's total budgeted revenue. Corporate and personal property taxes make up 35%, state funding 6% and 5% from grants, facilities rentals and other sources. JWCC President Mike Elbe is quoted in the statement as saying that in the upcoming year, "We are investing more dollars in larger strategic recruitment initiatives, knowing enrollment is more than half of our revenue." Elbe thinks that the initiatives will soon result in more credit hours.

Trustees also learned that JWCC is retaining nearly 80% of its' disabled students, and has seen a 20% increase in students using disability and counseling services.
