Moves blamed on budget impasse, expected slight decline in enrollment

John Wood Community College's Board of Trustees have approved plans to raise tuition by three dollars per credit hour, and cut four jobs.

The Board, meeting Tuesday night, said the moves were made in order to keep next year's budget balanced, in the face of a continuing lack of state aid and declining enrollment. In a statement, JWCC says they're expecting a slight decrease in enrollment projections compared to the current year, due to low-unemployment rates and smaller graduating classes from JWCC’s district high schools. The College also plans to introduce a four-week intersession to build new revenue. JWCC President Michael Elbe is quoted as saying "While we don’t want to increase tuition or reorganize positions, we need to, so we can maintain relevant programs and services focused on delivering the very best academic experience.” The College says the tuition hike amounts to an extra $96 a year for in-district students taking 32 credit hours.

The Board will see a complete budget proposal in June for the 2018 Fiscal Year, which starts July 1.
