Board wants to "minimize the impact on property taxes"

John Wood Community College's Board of Trustees wants to lower its' tax rate.

Wednesday night the Board proposed lowering the College’s tax rate for 2017, thus lowering its' budget. That's something JWCC has experience with, as over the past six years, the College has decreased its overall operating budget by $1.4 million, due to the uncertainty of state funding. In a statement, JWCC says it wants to lower the tax rate to $0.36562 per $100 of Equalized Assessed Valuation "to minimize the impact on property taxes, while planning for enrollment growth". The current tax rate is $0.36670 per $100 EAV. Even under the lower rate, the college's tax levy would still bring in over $5.9 million, nearly $364,000 more than last year. That increase is likely due to an increase in property values. The levy is expected to be approved next month.

The Board also accepted a grant of over $234,000 from the Illinois Community College Board Adult Education Grant for instruction and support services for adult learners.
