Devan Williams sentenced Monday on 2nd Degree Murder charge

A Keokuk man, who admitted killing his mother in January 2017, has been sentenced to a long prison term.

Court records show that Devan Williams received the maximum sentence of 50 years in prison Monday at a hearing in South Lee County District Court. Williams pleaded Guilty in March to one count of 2nd Degree Murder in North Lee County Circuit Court in a settlement with prosecutors. In return, a count of 1st Degree Murder was dropped. At the plea hearing, Williams admitted that he strangled and smothered 54 year old Lori Williams before crushing her larynx while she lay on her bed inside their Keokuk home.

Williams described the killing to Lee County District Judge John Wright, saying it started when he put his hand, then a pillow over his mother's mouth, so she would stop screaming at him.
