Carlita "Carrie" Steele pleads Not Guilty

A Keokuk School Board member has pleaded not guilty to a charge of domestic abuse assault.

The AP reports that a written plea and a demand for a jury trial were electronically filed Wednesday in Lee County for 40-year-old Carlita “Carrie” Steele. Her attorney, Curtis Dial, said Thursday that he’ll be filing a motion to dismiss the case. A criminal complaint says Steele’s husband, Christopher, told officers that his wife had threatened to shoot him and herself Tuesday night. Carlita Steele was arrested by Keokuk police early Wednesday morning. She's free after posting $1500 bond.

The Daily Gate-City reports that Steele was elected to the school board in 2013. Her first-four year term expires this fall, but it’s not known if she plans to run for re-election.
