Teen identified as Andrew Howe, 17, of Baring

A Missouri high school student is dead after he was fatally shot while deer hunting over the weekend.

Knox County Coroner Alan Rimer identifies the victim as 17-year old Andrew Howe of rural Baring. Authorities say that the shooting happened at about 1 PM Sunday in Knox County on property north of Baring. Rimer told Kirksville TV station KTVO Monday morning that Howe was deer hunting with his grandfather, Don Howe, also of rural Baring. According to Rimer, it appears the elder Howe mistook his grandson for a deer and fatally shot Andrew in the head. Rimer said the shooting appears to be an accident, but it is under investigation by the Missouri Department of Conservation. He said Andrew Howe was not wearing blaze orange when the shooting happened. Rimer pronounced the teen dead at the scene about an hour after the shooting. Rimer said an autopsy will likely take place Tuesday in Columbia, Missouri.

Knox County Superintendent Andy Turgeon says extra counselors will be at the school for most of the week to meet with any students about the death of Howe, who was a senior.
