Nicole Galloway announced audit, requested by city

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway says her office will audit the city of Center, after a request by the city council.

On Wednesday, Galloway announced she will accept that request to audit questionable financial activity. A statement from Galloway's office says the request comes after a complaint to the Auditor's Whistleblower Hotline and an investigation by the Public Corruption and Fraud Division in the State Auditor's Office. Galloway is quoted as saying that Center city officials asked for the audit on July 3rd to "get the facts about allegations of potential fraud and mismanagement." Center officials are concerned about the city's finances under former clerk, Tracey Ray. She was fired July 3rd after the City Council learned she hadn't filed the city's required financial statements with the state since 2015. The city is facing $144,000 in fines by the state.

Galloway says that investigators with her office conducted an investigation and found the city's concerns to be credible. An audit team will soon formally meet with the city to officially launch the audit. Auditors will then begin field work in Center.
