MoDOT awards contracts for U.S. 61 work at New London

Project will start later this year, be done by Nov. 1

The Missouri Department of Transportation says it's awarded the first contracts for work on a dangerous section of U.S. 61 in Ralls County.

MoDOT said Monday that the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a $1.7 million contract last Wednesday to Emery Sapp and Sons. They plan to work on the U.S. 61 corridor through New London. That work includes removing intersections at Route A, 5th Street, Kingsville Road, and re-designing the off ramp at the Missouri 19 interchange. In addition, Business 61 through New London will be resurfaced, including curb ramps at the Business 61 and Route V intersection, along with sidewalk improvements on the north side of Route A between West Clay and Church Streets. MoDOT says it plans to add a dedicated right turn lane at the southbound off-ramp of the 61/19 interchange, install offset left turn lanes on 61 at Route A, similar to what it did at 61 and Ross Street in Palmyra. MoDOT will also install a median U-turn on 61, a third of a mile north of Route A, add more acceleration and deceleration lanes on 61, and resurface Business 61 through New London. Work should start later this year, and be done by November 1st.

MoDOT says that a more specific schedule will be shared after the contractor provides their plan for finishing the work.
