Safety improvements coming to US 61 and Route A at New London

The Missouri Department of Transportation says it plans to soon make improvements to a dangerous intersection in Ralls County.

MoDOT said Friday that, after working with a local citizen’s advisory group, it will make short-term safety improvements at the intersection of US 61 and Route A in New London. That's after several serious accidents in the last few months. MoDOT Area Engineer Brian Untiedt says that drivers should start seeing some of the improvements soon. He added that survey and design work has begun on a permanent project that will make changes to how drivers access the intersections of US 61 with Route A and 5th street. Untiedt says that the changes will target the cause of the recent crashes, which have happened due to traffic crossing US 61 from Route A and 5th Street.Short-term improvements are still being evaluated, but one of those may include rumble strips on Route A.

MoDOT says it's planning to work on the design of the median u-turn and offset turn lanes over the next several months. Untiedt says that the movements that have been causing the crashes will be permanently restricted. A public meeting will be held this fall to show area residents what will be done to make the intersection safer.
