Not known how long power will be out; residents urged to conserve water

Monroe City is without power, and it may be a while before it's restored.

The power went out just before 9 AM Wednesday morning in the city, which has its' own municipal utilities, but buys power through the Missouri Public Utility Alliance. Monroe City police say that City Hall phone lines are down, but calls to the Monroe County 911 Dispatch Center are going through, though police are asking residents to limit non-emergency calls going into the 911 Center. They are recommending that due to the extended time it may take before power is back on, residents should keep doors to appliances like refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible. The 911 Center is asking Monroe City residents to conserve water. They say that crews are working on a back-up power supply for the water plant. Both local crews and units from surrounding areas have been called in to help restore power. Drivers are being asked to avoid driving around the work zones.

In addition, police say that residents who use oxygen or have electrical powered medical equipment at home should call the Dispatch Center at 573-735-4411 to be put on a list for additional oxygen tanks to be delivered. They can also move to a place with electricity. Police say that additional crews are working to get oygen tanks delivered to Monroe City.
