Shooting happened just after Midnight Friday

Investigators from the Missouri State Highway Patrol are looking into an officer-involved shooting that happened just after midnight Friday in Paris, Missouri.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department was called to Madison, Missouri where a man was trying to break into a vehicle with a hatchet. When the deputy arrived, the suspect - identified as 39 year old Kevin D. Marshall of Madison - fled in a vehicle and a pursuit ensued. A short time later Sheriff's Deputies saw Marshall walking along Highway 15 in Paris carrying a hatchet and a flashlight strapped to a baseball bat.

He refused demands to stop, threatened the deputies and broke into the Hickman's IGA grocery store.

A Monroe City Police canine unit was called to the scene and officers entered the business in an effort to take Marshall into custody. Marshall reportedly attacked a Sheriff’s Deputy and during the scuffle a Monroe City police officer and a Sheriff’s deputy fired their duty weapons at him.

Marshall was struck at least twice and was taken to the University Hospital in Columbia with serious injuries. A Monroe County Deputy received minor injuries during the attack and was transported by a private vehicle to the same hospital.

The Highway Patrol says they'll have more information about the shooting later this morning.
