One-year delay in QPS elementary school transitions possible

One-year delay in QPS elementary school transitions possible

7 years, 3 months ago by Scott Hardy

Matter to be decided by board later this month

There may be a one-year delay in the Quincy Public Schools' elementary school transition.

Superintendent Roy Webb told district employees in an email that the school board and administrators became concerned with the "number of student transitions" after recent community forums. Webb says that, "The board asked us to look at the plan and see how it would look if we delayed all transitions to one year." In his new proposal, Webb says the current school setup would remain the same next school year, with the new Monroe School site to open as a Kindergarten through 3rd grade building. Baldwin school will see a slight change of two sections of fourth and fifth. Webb is quoted by our news gathering partners at KHQA-TV as saying, "This isn't a setback, our end date isn't changing. We'll be done by August 2019 and we'll have all the kids in the new schools. This is just a changed [plan] - how we're going to get those kids there."
Webb suggests that in the 2018-19 school year, the new Monroe, 12th Street and 48th Street sites would open, and that Adams, Ellington and Madison would also be K-5 schools. Webb also says that the Baldwin elementary school would open in August 2019, and "take the students housed at Ellington and Madison. The southwest site would open and take the students housed at the Adams location.”

The new proposal will have to go before the School Board later this month for approval.
