Possible graves sighted on Adams County Jail site

Waiting on state to OK exhuming remains

Crews doing scans on the site of the new Adams County Jail may have found graves from the 1800's.

The crews, who used ground-penetrating radar last week on the east side of the Adams County Courthouse lawn to scan the land, have reportedly found what they think are between 15 and 20 graves. No physical evidence of any graves have been found yet. The next step in the process is for the archaeological firm hired by the County to handle the remains to get permission from the state Historic Preservation Agency to start digging. That process has been underway since the possibility of the graves' existence was first brought to light in December.

County officials hope the process is wrapped up by July, so construction on the $29 million Jail can start.
