Teachers, staff getting pay raise

Quincy's new elementary school on Harrison Street has been named in honor of a medical and philanthropic pioneer in Quincy.

The Quincy School Board Wednesday night voted to name the new K - 5 school Sarah Atwater Denman Elementary. Denman helped found Blessing Hospital, the Quincy Public Library and Friends in Council. In other action Wednesday night, Quincy school teachers, union and non union staff members are getting another pay hike. When the School Board granted the teachers a 1.5% pay hike a few months ago, it promised to bump their salaries even higher if state aid money increased. The state came through, so teachers and others can now count on a 2% pay increase. Quincy School Board President Sayeed Ali couldn't be happier

In fact, QPS's financial situation has improved so much in the past few months, Moody's has upgraded its' bond rating. After a visit to Quincy by Moody's analysts, Moody's set the bond rating at A2. That's two steps better than the previous BBB rating. Ali says the vote of confidence by Moody's is huge for taxpayers, in that the Quincy School District will get a more favorable interest rate on the just-approved $21 million bond sale. That sale completes the $89 million bond issue approved by voters to build the five new K - 5 schools. The Board also approved spending $30,000 to re-surface Blue Devil Gym this summer. The Holiday Tournament committee will pay for some of that cost.
