The Quincy City Council has voted to accept a state grant to study how traffic in the Historic Business District would be altered by a new Memorial Bridge. Scott Hardy has more.

The Council voted unanimously to accept a $120,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation. That money, and up to $30,000 in city dollars, would be used to fund the Quincy Regional Transportation Plan. That plan would study how traffic would be changed if IDOT's plan to build a new Memorial Bridge that would align with York Street is adopted. It would also incorporate parts of the Quincy Next Strategic Plan, to better connect a proposed Hospitality Corridor on 3rd and 4th Streets near Washington Park, and possibly convert 3rd Street to two-way traffic. The plan may also study how to improve connectivity to major highways such as US 61 and Interstates 72 and 172. City Director of Planning and Development Chuck Bevelheimer says the study is the right thing for the city to do.

The full study will likely be done in the next 12 months, while work on any new bridge is still years away. The bridge would likely cost anywhere from $95 to $100 million, and would be paid for by both the Illinois and Missouri Departments of Transportation.
