Tax rate would stay flat

The Quincy City Council has approved a first reading of an funding ordinance that won't raise residents' property taxes.

The City Council approved a first reading Monday night of the city's proposed property tax rate for next year. That rate will stay flat. The city's share of a resident's average property tax bill is about 13 percent. The money from property taxes goes to fund police and fire fighters' pension funds, as well as the Quincy Public Library and bond debt. The City plans to pay $7.1 millioninto those pension funds, which is up $500,000 from last year. Of that amount, $4.8 million will come from the tax levy. The rest will come from other city revenues, including video gaming.

The Council approved a first reading of an ordinance that would change billing for city water and sewer customers from quarterly to monthly. City Engineer Jeff Conte explained the reasons for the change.

If approved, the new billing would go into effect January 1st. The City Council also approved a first reading of an ordinance that would set up an Economic Growth Fund. Money for the fund will come from the 1 cent food and beverage tax narrowly passed last month.
