Classified as a “disproportionately impacted area”

The Pritzker Administration has selected several areas of the state where entrepreneurs who want to open adult-use cannabis shops may be able to get state help, including an area on Quincy's west side.

The Administration Monday posted a map showing certain areas of the state that will qualify as “disproportionately impacted areas” for social equity applicants. That includes all of Quincy west of 8th Street, and a section east of 8th Street to 12th, from York to Spring, and a separate area east from 8th to 12th between Locust and Koch's Lane. The Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity says that it determined the areas using criteria established in the new state law. To be designated as a disproportionately impacted area, a Census tract must have high rates of arrest, conviction, and incarceration related to cannabis, among other qualifications including poverty and unemployment. In a statement, Pritzker says that not only will social equity applicants get points on their applications, but many applicants will also get grants, technical assistance, low-interest loans and fee reductions and waivers.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation will post the application Tuesday, and will start accepting applications for licenses December 10th. It plans to issue up to 75 licenses by May 1st.
