Issued statement saying it's "voluntarily cooperating" in investigation of alleged abuse by priests

The Diocese of Springfield in Illinois has issued a response to Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's ongoing investigation into the Catholic Church, saying it is cooperating.

In a Thursday afternoon statement, the Diocese says it has been voluntarily cooperating with Madigan's inquiry into the history of, and how the Diocese handles cases of abuse of minors by priests. The diocese says it's provided Madigan’s office with what it calls "comprehensive documentation of its policies and procedures", as well as info about past abuse cases. Also on Thursday the Diocese published the names of what it calls a "small number" of clergy with substantiated sexual abuse allegations of minors as determined by its Review Board. That list includes the name of former Archbishop Daniel Ryan.

Madigan's office is also looking into allegations of abuse by priests in other Illinois dioceses.
