Next Phase of U.S. 61/McMasters Avenue Improvements to Begin Tuesday

Weather permitting, access from U.S. Route 61/McMasters Avenue to Stardust Drive and Pirate Pride Drive will close around 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening, June 19 for intersection improvements. “These improvements include signal relocation and widening of the intersection to provide an easier transition for truck traffic entering onto and exiting from Stardust Drive,” explained Martin D. Lincoln, Jr.  The closure is expected to last through August 6.  This phase of work will not impact north and southbound traffic on U.S. Route 61/McMasters Avenue. Signage is posted to identify the designated turn around for northbound traffic at the U.S. 61/Missouri Route 168 intersection.

Work on the curb, gutter and sidewalk improvements continues on U.S. Route 61/McMasters Avenue between Stardust Drive and U.S. Route 36/ Interstate 72.  This work will continue to require the center turn lane to be closed for up to two more months.  During this time, the section between Stardust Drive and the I-72 interchange continues to have two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound open to traffic. Only right in, right out turns are allowed in this section; no left turns are allowed for safety purposes. Once the sidewalk, curb and gutter work is completed on both sides of McMasters Avenue, the center turn lane will be reopened and left turns will be allowed again.

Additional work to be completed later in the project includes new signage near the U.S. Route 36 interchange with much of the work to be done overnight between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

All lanes of U.S. 61/McMasters Avenue will be resurfaced once the other improvements are completed.  The resurfacing portion of the project is expected to take place in September and the project will be complete by mid-October.

The project begins north of the Missouri Route 168 interchange in Hannibal and continues to just north of Warren Barrett Drive.  Chester Bross of Palmyra was awarded the project for just over $5.2 million.
