Defense request to move trial denied Friday

A Quincy man, due to be re-tried next month on one count of 1st Degree Murder in the 2015 shooting death of Carlous Wires, Sr., will have his trial in Adams County.

Steven Gavin was in Adams County Circuit Court Friday for a motion hearing. His defense wanted to move the re-trial, due to start April 8th, out of Adams County due to extensive media coverage. According to our news gathering partners at KHQA-TV, that motion was denied by Judge Robert Adrian, who said he could re-visit the issue if there's difficulty selecting jurors for a re-trial. The media, and even the general public, will be barred from hearing some evidence that could be presented before the re-trial. Lead trial attorney Josh Jones proposed that Friday in court, and Judge Adrian agreed. The first trial ended with a hung jury. Gavin faces four counts of 1st Degree Murder and one count of Armed Robbery. He's accused of fatally shooting Carlous Wires,Sr., then robbing him in his North 4th Street home in November 2015, in a disagreement over the price of a drug sale.

Gavin remains in the Adams County Jail on $5 million bond.
