The American Farm Bureau Federation is celebrating 100 years with several policy wins for agriculture.

5 years, 2 months ago by Jim Dewey

Celebrating 100 years of the American Farm Bureau Federation in New Orleans, Louisiana, President Zippy Duvall highlighted 2018 Farm Bureau successes. At the 2019 AFBF Annual Convention and IDEAg Trade Show, Duvall addressed Farm Bureau members during the event’s opening general session Sunday. He says farmers and ranchers faced struggles in 2018, much like they did when AFBF was founded 100 years ago…

“During that time, farmers were struggling. They were grasping with trying to find a way to make a living with transportation problems and trade problems. And all the farmers across America, they started uniting and we got to 1919, and they looked at what they were accomplishing in their communities and they said we’ve got to do this on the national level. And they created what we know as American Farm Bureau because they needed one united voice.”

Despite the challenges farmers face today, Duvall says 2018 also brought great policy change for the future…

“Tax reform, trade, farm bill, regulatory reform. It is going to go down in history as a great year as far as farm policy. You know who made it happen? It was you. It was the emails, the phone calls, it was the trips to Washington, it was going to a town hall meeting and seeing great people like Pat Roberts. You’re responsible for these wins, you are the power and strength of this organization.”

Duvall says that work will continue this year…

“We are going to work on farm labor. With all this discussion about a wall and all this discussion about immigration reform, we have got to solve the biggest problem that’s facing American farmers, and that’s farm labor. We are going to continue our regulatory reform, we are going to talk about trade more, and make sure we stay on target, and we’re going to talk about infrastructure, broadband. Broadband is not a luxury anymore, it’s a necessity. The technologies you use today will not work in places in our country without broadband and we’ve got to solve that problem.”
