Trump Proclaims Ag Day

7 years ago AFBF Meatingplace

In proclaiming National Agriculture Day as March 21st, 2017, President Donald Trump encouraged all Americans to observe the day by “recognizing the preeminent role that agriculture plays in Americans' daily life.” Started in 1973, the day was launched as an effort to increase public awareness of agriculture's vital role in our society. As part of the proclamation statement, Trump called U.S. farmers and ranchers “the heart and soul of America.”

The Department of Agriculture designated $6 million to help aid farmers and ranchers recovering from recent wildfires in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. The $6 million in available funding, delivered through USDA’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program, will assist farmers and ranchers as they attempt to restore grazing lands, rehabilitate devastated landscapes, rebuild fencing and protect damaged watersheds.

EQIP is a voluntary conservation program that provides financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers to help plan and implement conservation practices that address local and state resource concerns. States will begin accepting applications in the near future. Producers in the affected counties are encouraged to check with their local NRCS service centers for additional information.

Meatingplace reports that while the Trump administration prepares to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), U.S. Senator Pat Roberts - chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, is warning against any reconsideration of country-of-origin labeling (COOL).

COOL is reportedly among the administration’s “key elements of a model trade agreement” that it aims to address in renegotiating NAFTA and other trade deals. But in a committee meeting last week Roberts told Robert Lighthizer, Trump’s nominee for U.S. Trade Representative ambassador, to scrap that idea.

The U.S. repealed COOL in December 2015 after Canada and Mexico convinced the World Trade Organization that the rule was discriminatory and violated international trade laws. Roberts said. “We fixed the issue of COOL in 2015. We don’t need to go down that road again."
