Unemployment jumps in April in Northeast Missouri, Southeast Iowa

Up over 3% in both Hannibal and Marion County, over 8% in Lee County

As expected, unemployment numbers rose in Northeast Missouri in April, as a result of stay-at-home orders issued to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Missouri Workforce Development released those numbers Thursday which show that the unemployment rate rose in both Hannibal and Marion County by 3.1 per cent. Both Hannibal and Marion County have a nearly 7 per cent unemployment rate. Nearly all other counties in Northeast Missouri showed increases of 3 to 4 per cent, led by Clark County's 5.7 per cent jump in April. That county's unemployment rate is now over 10 per cent. Shelby County was the exception, where unemployment dropped by 7 tenths in April, to 4.2 per cent. April's unemployment rate in Lee County, Iowa went up by over 8 per cent last month. According to Iowa Workforce Development, in Lee County, April's unemployment rose by 8.5 per cent, to 13.3 per cent. To the north, Des Moines County's rate rose by over 9 per cent to 14.9 per cent.

Figures for Illinois, including Quincy and Adams County, will be released Friday.
