Women’s Equality Day

In 1971, the U.S. Congress designated August 26th as "Women’s Equality Day." Each year, countless numbers gather to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. Still less than 100 years old, it’s important to remember how relatively new this turning point in the history of the struggle for equal treatment of women and women’s rights, is to our nation.

This year, The League of Women Voters of Adams County Illinois will host a celebration to honor this historic milestone. The celebration includes speaker Megan Boccardi, Associate Professor of History at QU. Associate Professor Boccardi’s talk "From Seneca Falls to the Suffrage Amendment: Women’s Fight for Voting Rights in America" will look at the history of the movement, to the passage of the amendment, and briefly mention the current status of women’s political participation.

The celebration is being held on the 2nd floor of the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County Museum. Located at 332 Maine Street in downtown Quincy (corner of 4th and Maine), please note that the 2nd floor is a walkup, and that no lifts are available currently.

The League of Women Voters of Adams County Illinois warmly invites everyone to join us. We encourage you to bring a guest, especially those of the younger generation. This is a wonderful opportunity to remind our young people the sacrifices made generations before, so women could vote.
